CALENDAR OF EVENTS MAY 3, SATURDAY, 7:30 p.m. Merrily We Roll Along-Theatre Production Where: Birmingham-Southern College Theatre One Details: A cautionary musical tale about hopes, dreams, and what happens when we let go of what is dearest to us, Merrily examines the lives of three friends as they navigate their way through their careers, relationships, triumphs, and tragedies – all told in reverse time. Features the Sondheim classics “Not A Day Goes By,” “Old Friends,” and “Our Time.” Seats to plays at Birmingham-Southern College are all general admission. Try to arrive at the College Theatre Lobby by 7:00 p.m. so we can go into the theatre as a group as soon as the rope barrier to the theatre is opened. We will try to hold seats for Crescendo people who have paid for their tickets in advance. Please arrive in the College Theatre Lobby no later than 7:10 p.m. for this performance. Tickets not picked up by 7:15 p.m. may be resold. The theatre makes every effort to fill all empty seats. MAY 4, SUNDAY, 4:00-7:00 p.m. Crescendo Potluck Supper Party for Singles Where: Home of Crescendo member Sandra Latko, 5472 Scout Creek Drive in Hoover Details: You are encouraged to invite one or more single guests to come with you since a potluck supper is one of the best Crescendo events for introducing yourself (if you are not already a member) and your friends to Crescendo. Please bring a dish to share with the group. Please note that you are required to bring a dish of food to share with the group. Do not come without food. Beverages will also be welcome in addition to your food. Crescendo will furnish soft drinks, cups, plates, flatware, napkins and ice. Dress—casual. Go to the light where Walgreen’s is on the left. Make a left onto Stadium Trace which brings you into the Trace Crossings development. Go straight up to the first light and make a right there onto Brocks Gap. Go up Brocks Gap and make a right into the Scout Creek development. This will bring you on Scout Creek Drive. MAY 5, MONDAY, 7:30 p.m. FREE Concert by Hilltop Singers Where: Birmingham Southern College, Hill Hall 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham Details: The members of this twelve-to-fourteen student jazz choir with small back up band sing superbly together—as well as any group in New York City or Los Angeles. Come and enjoy an hour or so of popular music and show tunes. You’ll be glad you came! Meet in Hill Hall downstairs lobby at 7:15 p.m. We’ll go into the concert hall at 7:20 p.m. and sit together. One friend of Dan’s commented that this was the most romantic dinner restaurant location she had ever been to in Birmingham. MAY 10, SATURDAY, 7:30 p.m. Godspell--Musical Theatre Production Where: Red Mountain Theatre Company Cabaret Theatre, 301 19th Street North, Birmingham Details: An extraordinary portrayal of redemptive love, Godspell is a fun, modern day version of the New Testament parables straight from the Gospel according to Matthew. This Broadway smash hit features impressive music by Stephen Schwartz, including the international hit, “Day By Day,” along with “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “All Good Gifts” and “By My Side.” Using a variety of theatrical storytelling traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, complete with a message of kindness, tolerance and hope. Details: Socialize with other Crescendo folks and give the Crescendo singles mingles a try! MAY 17, SATURDAY, 8:00 p.m. Alabama Symphony Orchestra MasterWorks Concert Where: Alys Stephens Center, Jemison Concert Hall Details: The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of ASO Music Director Justin Brown will perform the following works: Cantus in memoriam for Benjamin Britten by Arvo Part; the Sibelius Violin Concerto with guest soloist Pekka Kuusisto; and the Symphony No. 1 by William Walton. Renowned Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto makes his Alabama Symphony debut with his countryman Sibelius' hauntingly beautiful Violin Concerto. From neighboring Estonia, Arvo Part experiments with silence and sound in the meditative Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten, while English composer William Walton's powerfully expressive Symphony No. 1 rounds out the program - and the season.
